Company RUSAL
Background
United company RUSAL was formed by the merger of three companies: RUSAL,
SUAL and Glencore (alumina assets). Under the terms of the share-for-share
deal, EN+ group as RUSAL's shareholder will own 53.8 per cent stake in the
United Company, 18.5 per cent is owned by ONEXIM, SUAL's shareholders own 18
per cent and Glencore the remaining 9.7 per cent stake.
Based on the regional sales, Western Europe, CIS Asia and US contributed
about 46 per cent, 23 per cent and 8 per cent to the primary aluminium of the
United Company of RUSAL, respectively. In 2008, the company acquired Baoguan
cathode plant in China
and 25 per cent plus two shares of Norilsk Nickel.
Plant locations and capacity details
The annual production of aluminium and alumina was around 4.4 million
tonnes and 11.3 million tonnes, respectively. The combined company own bauxite
mining, alumina refinery, aluminium smelting and foil production facilities.
The company has 15 aluminium smelters, 12 alumina refineries, 7 bauxite mines,
3 foil mills, 1 foil rolling mill and 2 cathode plants. To cope with the
falling global demand for aluminium, the company has announced a production cut
of 3.45 million tonnes in alumina and 0.5 million tonnes in aluminium.
Business mix
Key products of the company include primary aluminium, primary wrought
alloys, primary foundry alloys, foil and packaging, powders metallurgy, wire
rods, silicon, chemical products, corundum products and gallium.
Market position
The company is the world's second largest producer of aluminium after
Rio Tinto Alcan. The company accounts for almost 12 per cent of the
global primary aluminium and 15 per cent of the global alumina production,
respectively.
