Background
Alcoa is one of the leading players in the global aluminium industry.
The company conducts operations in more than 200 locations in 35 countries.
Based on the regional sales, United States
and Europe contributed about 53 per cent and
26 per cent to Alcoa's sales in 2008. In addition, Alcoa has invested in
activities in Australia , Brazil , China ,
Iceland , Guinea and Russia . Currently, Alcoa does not
have a significant presence in the Indian aluminium industry.
Plant and capacity details
Since 1998, Alcoa has increased its primary aluminium capacity
significantly through acquisitions. As of December 31, 2008, the company had
about 4.5 million tonnes per annum (around 10 per cent of the global capacity
of 43 million tpa) primary aluminium consolidated capacity and 0.8 million
tonnes per annum idle capacity. In June 2008, Alcoa sold its 10 per cent
interest in the Tema facility in Ghana to the Government of Ghana.
Globally, Alcoa is the largest player in alumina with a total
consolidated capacity of 15.8 million tonnes (around 23 per cent of the global
capacity). In June 2008, AWAC (Alcoa world alumina and chemicals) and Vietnam
National Coal Minerals Industries Group signed a cooperation agreement in which
AWAC agreed to acquire 40 per cent interest in the 600,000 mtpy Nhan Co alumina
refinery to be constructed in Vietnam 's
Central Highlands in Dak
Nong Province
by a joint stock company majorly owned by Vinacomin.
Business mix
The company's operations consist of five segments worldwide: Alumina,
primary metals, flat rolled products, engineered products packaging and
consumer electronics. Aluminium and alumina represent more than three-fourths
of the Alcoa's revenue. In the downstream semi-fabrications segment, Alcoa has
presence in aerospace, automotive, packaging, buildings and construction and
commercial transportation.
Market position
Alcoa is world leader in the production and management of primary
aluminium, fabricated aluminium and alumina combined. The company is the
world's third largest producer of aluminium behind Rio Tinto Alcan and Rusal.
